Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbVxMT2Z0Jk It has taken me over three months to make this video. This is part two of my race by race season review of the 2009 F1 World Championship.
2009 was a much different season to previous years, with a new team sealing both titles in their first season of F1 after Honda pulled out in the European winter of 2008/2009. At the first race in Melbourne, the deputising Brawn team secured the front two grid positions with Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello going on to finish the race in that order respectively. Jenson Button had won 6 out of 7 races by Turkey, but it all changed from there and remarkably, he didn’t score another win all year!
Silverstone was the turning point for the championship. Sebastian Vettel lead a Red Bull resurgence by winning in Britain before Mark Webber broke through with his maiden F1 win at the next round in Germany. Brawn were struggling for grip all mid-season and the championship was beginning to become under threat from the charging Red Bulls.
In Hungary, Felipe Massa was hospitalised after a huge crash in Qualifying caused by a failure on Rubens Barrichello’s Brawn. A spring from the back of Barrichello’s car bounced down the road before striking his compatriot in the head, fracturing his skull and knocking him out instantly. His recovery was quicker than first expected and he will race again in 2010. Initially, Michael Schumacher was called up as a replacement for the sidelined Massa, but a neck problem forced him to pull out of his highly anticipated return handing Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer his first drive in nearly 10 years. He lasted two disastrous races before he was replaced by Giancarlo Fisichella.
Rubens Barrichello took two wins mid-way through the second half of the season to set up a dramatic title showdown in Brazil between himself, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel, the latter needing a huge amount of luck. I have dedicated over 2 and a half minutes to the Brazilian round alone, where Jenson Button produced one of the most entertaining drives to come through the field and secure the Drivers World Championship with one round remaining. (This is all from my memory, some of it may be slightly inaccurate, please tell me if I am wrong)
Once again, the mysterious bug encountered upon uploading Windows Movie Maker created 16:9 WMV files has struck me, therefore this video has been squashed into a 4:3 image. Also the synchronisation between audio and video has been slightly altered to the raw file. Some parts will seem out of time for this reason even though they weren’t when I created this video.
I will be posting this on a file sharing site like Mediafire or Rapidshare shortly so it will be available for a much higher quality download; first I need to get a new video editing program as Movie Maker won’t allow me to save the entire clip as one DV-AVI file due to a size restriction. The reason it took me so long to finish this is it has been made entirely with Windows Movie Maker.
Please rate and comment, this is a lot of work.
I have incorporated some of the best bits of the commentary by the BBC team; Martin Brundle and Jonathon Legard.
